Stat of the Day

7 – The week belonged to Michael Phelps, who finished the World Swimming Championships in Melbourne with 7 gold medals and set 5 world records. His seven golds were the most ever in a World Swimming Championship and ties for the most gold at a major international meet with Mark Spitz, who achieved that in the ’72 Olympics.

Phelps’ chance for eight golds was wiped out when his U.S. teammates were disqualified in the 400 medley relay preliminaries due to an early exchange. The American hopes to have the same success, if not one better, in the ’08 Olympics in Beijing.
