Don Imus Canceled

By Chris Le

Last week, radio personality Don Imus inexplicably labeled the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.” The next morning on his radio show, Imus apologized, stating that his behavior was “completely inappropriate, and [he] can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry.”

Too little, too late.

One week after Imus’ remarks, MSNBC has decided to cancel the “Imus in the Morning” radio program, a decision that has come after the loss of numerous show sponsors — such as American Express, Staples and General Motors — and expressed outrage from an assortment of groups.

Talk about effectively killing your career. Don Imus will now enter the group of Michael Richards (aka Kramer) as those who will forever be known as racists.

  1. And now CBS…

Another double standard where this clearly would not have raised as much publicity had a black person made a racial remark about white girls, whatever that may be. Funny how Imus and Michael Richards are both white…

  2. Let’s not go there…

  3. The whole thing is ridiculous. He apologized, so get over it people, what else is he expected to do? Perhaps more attention should be focused on today’s lyrical content and music videos of mainstream rappers, who say much worse things about black people and other races and who degrade women. Why is it that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson haven’t talked about or condemned this racist and sexist music culture. Oh I forgot, we’re in America. We wouldn’t want to offend anybody. It’s a pity how silenced we all have become out of fear.

  4. I agree that there appears to be a double-standard, but to me, racism is racism. And blacks–like any other ethnic group–has the right to stand up against it no matter if it seems to be an overreaction or not.
